An image said to be of the Virgin of Guadalupe appears under a patio lamp at an Ensenada hospital. Hundreds gather nightly for what they call a miracle.
ENSENADA, Mexico – The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe that appears each night on a hospital wall is bringing hundreds of people a night to a hospital at this beach-side resort.

The image, about 3 feet high, appears in the light cast from a halogen patio lamp that comes on automatically at dark in the hospital courtyard entrance.

Neighbors noticed the image on April 19, and informed hospital officials, said hospital spokeswoman Dennise Arvide.

Since then, crowds of people have been flocking to the state-run hospital in the evenings. A group always stays all night to guard the image.

When the light flickers on, the crowd that has gathered begins singing and crying. Many leave offerings of candles, flowers – even the occasional mariachi serenade.

Arvide says the image hasn't affected hospital business because the main entrance, where the faithful have been gathering, closes at 8 p.m.

Police have been closing off the street at night to accommodate the crowds.

Images of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint, have appeared all over the Americas, including a subway station in Mexico City. The images usually generate massive pilgrimages by Roman Catholic faithful.
